PBS- Phosphate Buffered Saline, is an isotonic diluting buffer for bacteria. As PBS is isotonic and has no nutritional value, it is the ideal diluent for bacterial cultures when undertaking enumeration studies as it neither promotes bacterial growth nor lyses the bacteria.
